John Townshend, 4th Marquess Townshend

John Townshend, 4th Marquess Townshend (28 March 1798 – 10 September 1863), known as John Townshend until 1855, was a British nobleman, sailor, and politician.

He was the son of Lord John Townshend and Georgiana Anne Poyntz, and the grandson of George Townshend, 1st Marquess Townshend.

Townshend served in the Royal Navy and reached the rank of Rear-Admiral. He also sat in Parliament as the Member of Parliament for Tamworth from 1847 to 1855.

In 1855 he inherited the marquessate from his cousin and became the 4th Marquess Townshend, moving to the House of Lords.

He married Elizabeth Jane Crichton-Stuart on 18 August 1825. Elizabeth was the daughter of Lord George Stuart and the granddaughter of John Crichton-Stuart, 1st Marquess of Bute. They had five children.

He died in September 1863, aged 65, after a fall from his horse at Raynham Hall, Norfolk, and was buried at East Raynham. He was succeeded by his eldest son, John. Elizabeth Townshend died in 1877.
