Measurement Science and Technology is a monthly, peer‑reviewed journal published by IOP Publishing. It covers measurement, instrumentation and sensor technology used in science. The editor‑in‑chief is Andrew Yacoot of the National Physical Laboratory.

The journal began in 1923 as the Journal of Scientific Instruments. J. J. Thomson introduced the first issue, noting there was no English‑language journal devoted to scientific instruments. The idea was supported by Richard Glazebrook, the first president and director of the National Physical Laboratory, where the journal was initially edited. The publication emphasized interdisciplinarity, inviting biologists, engineers, chemists and instrument makers to participate alongside physicists on its scientific advisory committee.

In 1960 the Institute of Physics merged with the Physical Society of London. In 1968 these journals were reorganized as part of the Journal of Physics series (A to E), with Journal of Physics E: Scientific Instruments being the fifth journal in the series. In 1990 the journal was renamed Measurement Science and Technology to reflect a broader focus beyond building instruments. Since 2003 the complete archive of articles from 1874 onward has been available online.

The journal is indexed in major databases and has a 2023 impact factor of 2.7. It is published monthly in a hybrid open‑access model. The print ISSN is 0957-0233 and the online ISSN is 1361-6501.
