John Lang (1816–1864) was Australia’s first native-born novelist and a lawyer. Born in Parramatta near Sydney, he studied at Sydney College and Cambridge, returning to Australia in 1837 to work as a barrister. In 1842 he moved to India, where he built a successful legal career, started newspapers, and wrote. He defended high-profile clients, including Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi in her battles against the British East India Company. Lang died in Mussoorie, India, and is buried in Camel’s Back Cemetery; his grave was forgotten for almost a century until Ruskin Bond found it.
