The 1973 DFB-Pokal final decided the winner of the 1972–73 cup. It was played on 23 June 1973 at the Rheinstadion in Düsseldorf, with 69,600 spectators. Borussia Mönchengladbach beat 1. FC Köln 2–1 after extra time. Gladbach took the lead when Herbert Wimmer scored in the 24th minute, Köln equalised just before halftime through Herbert Neumann, and Jupp Heynckes had a penalty saved. In extra time, Günter Netzer came on for Christian Kulik and scored the winner in the 94th minute after a wall pass with Rainer Bonhof. Netzer’s goal became famous and helped him move to Real Madrid. Weisweiler had built Gladbach into a top European side, and Köln would not win another DFB-Pokal until 1977, after Weisweiler had taken over there as coach.
