Switched is the first book in Amanda Hocking’s Trylle Trilogy. It follows Wendy Everly, a teenage girl who learns she is not entirely human but a member of the Trylle, a royal, magical people. The story opens with a memory from her sixth birthday, when a party gift and a confrontation reveal that Wendy’s mother might not be her real mother and that danger surrounds her.

Years later, at a new high school, Wendy meets Finn Holmes, who shocks her by saying she is a changeling with royal Trylle blood. He explains that her ability to persuade people just by looking into their eyes comes from her Trylle power. After a frightening encounter, Finn rescues Wendy from danger and brings her to Forening, a protected community in Minnesota where the Trylle live secretly.

There Wendy learns she is a princess who will become queen one day. She meets Queen Elora, Rhys (a human child raised by the Trylle), and other Trylle, and begins training to understand Trylle rules and how to control her powers. She also learns that she must be careful about her feelings for Rhys, as romantic relationships can affect the royal bloodline.

An upcoming royal ball becomes a test for Wendy. Elora pressures her to choose a new name, but Wendy resists. During the ball, a Vittra attack forces the Trylle to defend themselves. Finn fights to protect Wendy, and Tove, a young Markis, uses his powers to save Finn. The Trylle defeat the Vittra, but Finn leaves the court, which makes Wendy angry. She uses her persuasive power to get Rhys to drive her back to her brother Matt and their guardian Maggie.

Switched was originally released as a self-published eBook in 2010 and later published in paperback in 2012. In February 2011, the Trylle Trilogy was optioned for a film.
