Jim Russell (hurler)
Jim Russell (1 May 1897 – 8 January 2001) was an Irish hurler who played for Shamrocks and Cork. He was born in Shanbally, County Cork, and learned hurling as a schoolboy. Russell began playing for Shamrocks in 1912 and helped the club win the Cork Intermediate Hurling Championship in 1915 after defeating Castletownroche; Shamrocks also reached the senior final in 1916, losing to Midleton. He joined the Cork senior hurling team in 1920 and was an unused substitute when Cork lost the All-Ireland final to Dublin. He later played for Cork at the junior level.
Russell trained as a fitter-turner at the Royal Navy Dockyard in Haulbowline. In 1926 he emigrated to New York City, working as a fitter before joining the U.S. Civil Service in 1937. He returned to Cork after retiring in 1961 and died in a Rochestown nursing home on 8 January 2001, aged 103.
