Postal codes in Puerto Rico follow the U.S. ZIP code system. Puerto Rico uses ZIP codes 00600–00799 and 00900–00999. The 008xx range is for the U.S. Virgin Islands. San Juan, Puerto Rico, is the main mail processing center for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Geography of the codes:
- 006xx covers northwestern Puerto Rico
- 007xx covers southeastern Puerto Rico
- 009xx covers the San Juan metropolitan area

How the numbers work:
- The first three digits identify a general area or city.
- The fourth and fifth digits point to a specific post office or neighborhood. In busier areas, they can indicate a district or borough.

ZIP+4 details:
- Each ZIP code can have an extra four digits (ZIP+4) for a precise location. For example, 00716-2604: 00716 is the east part of Ponce, and 2604 pinpoints a small section on Aceitillo Street in the Los Caobos neighborhood.
