Jim Gregory (basketball)
Jim Gregory (born July 25, 1949) is a former American basketball player who played for East Carolina University from 1968–69 to 1970–71. A 6-foot-7 forward from Gary, West Virginia, he scored 1,193 points and grabbed 852 rebounds in three seasons. He led the Pirates with 18.3 points per game and 11.5 rebounds per game as a senior, earning Southern Conference Co-Player of the Year (shared with Tom Jasper of William & Mary) and First-team All-SoCon in 1971.
Although ECU did not win a conference title or make the postseason during his time, Gregory was part of a rare frontcourt trio in 1969–70 where all three starters averaged double-doubles: Jim Gregory (16.5 ppg / 10.4 rpg), Jim Fairley (16.7 / 12.1), and Jim Modlin (18.5 / 10.5). This may be the only NCAA season in which three teammates averaged double-doubles.
After college, he was drafted in the 10th round of the 1971 ABA Draft by the Memphis Pros but never played in the ABA. ECU inducted him into its Hall of Fame in 1982. For his career at ECU, Gregory averaged 15.5 points and 11.1 rebounds per game, with the 11.1 rebounds per game tying for first in school history.
