Javed Khan (actor)
Javed Khan, born Javed Yaqub Khan in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, is an Indian film and television actor and former model. He studied at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune. Coming from a prominent family—his father, Mohammed Yaqub Khan, was a top criminal lawyer, and his mother, Raisa Yaqub, was from a royal family—Khan excelled in school in Bhopal, topping the merit lists and serving as school captain in 1979. He earned the President Scout award with 24 badges before going to St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, for a BSc in mathematics and economics. While at college, director Shyam Benegal spotted him for ad films, starting with Colgate and followed by campaigns for Gold Spot, Bombay Dyeing, Arvind Mills, and Nescafé. He also entered fashion, walking in shows and being noticed by the industry.
Khan was signed for his first film while still at FTII. His debut, Apradhi Kaun?, did well in its first week and he was praised as a heartthrob, winning the Most Promising Newcomer of the Year award from critics and clubs. He acted in several other films, including Chambal Ke Daku and others with Rajesh Khanna and Shabana Azmi, and even had a brief appearance in Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat. He later shifted his focus to television, where he played Tej Singh in Chandrakanta and appeared in serials such as Yug, Betaal Pachisi, Zee Horror Show, Nagin, Fasana, Main Dilli Hoon, Ramayan, The Trap, and Shakuntala as Maharaja Puru.
In 2004 he started Glamour Zone — Javed Khan’s acting and modelling academy in Bhopal. It has an advisory council with names like Ravi Chopra, David Dhawan, and Roshan Taneja, and more than 100 students have trained there. Khan also served as president of SCUD (Society for Children who are Underdeveloped and Disabled), helping provide free education to special and needy children across India, especially in Madhya Pradesh.
