On 6 March 2024, a Russian missile exploded in Odesa, Ukraine, near a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in the city’s port area during Mitsotakis’s visit. The attack happened around 10:40 local time. Five people were killed and several were wounded.

Reports said the leaders were about to enter their cars when the missile hit about 150 meters away, and they were unharmed. Ukrainian officials said the strike did not appear to target them, though some described it as a near-miss.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said it had targeted a hangar in the port that stored Ukrainian naval drones.

An air-raid warning had been issued before the explosion.

Reactions followed: Zelenskyy condemned Russia’s attack, Mitsotakis called it an intense experience, the U.S. said it showed Ukraine’s need for air defense, and the European Commission president condemned it as vile and a new act of terror.
