Jamel Johnson (defensive back)
Jamel Johnson is an American football defensive back for the TCU Horned Frogs. He plays safety and is a junior, listed at 6 feet 1 inch and 200 pounds.
Early life and high school
Johnson went to Seguin High School in Arlington, Texas. He was a four-star recruit, ranked as the 33rd-best safety and the 357th overall prospect in the 2023 class. He chose to play for TCU over offers from Arkansas, Florida State, and Ole Miss.
College career
- 2023: As a freshman at TCU, Johnson had 19 tackles and 1 tackle for a loss.
- 2024: He totaled 73 tackles, 3 passes defended, and a forced fumble. He started the season strong with 11 tackles in his first start against Stanford, and he had 11 more tackles in a game versus UCF. After the season, he briefly entered the transfer portal but returned to the Horned Frogs.
- 2025: Johnson had a standout game with two interceptions in a win over SMU and was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week. He was also a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award.
