Jackson Murugara
Jackson Murugara I.M.C. (born 7 April 1970) is a Kenyan Roman Catholic bishop and a member of the Consolata Missionaries. He serves as the Bishop of the Diocese of Meru in Kenya.
Appointed by Pope Francis on 16 January 2025, Murugara was named Coadjutor Bishop of Meru to assist and eventually succeed Bishop Salesius Mugambi. He was ordained a priest on 15 August 2001 and took his perpetual vows as a Consolata Missionary on 18 November 2000. He was consecrated a bishop on 19 March 2025 at Kinoru Stadium in Meru, with Archbishop Hubertus van Megen as principal consecrator. He became the local ordinary of Meru on 1 January 2026 after Bishop Mugambi retired.
Early life and education: He was born in Kamanyaki, Tharaka-Nithi County. He studied at Muthitwa Primary School (1981–1988) and Mitiri Boys’ School, then attended St. Pius X Minor Seminary Nkubu (1990–1992). He earned a Philosophy and Religious Studies degree from the Consolata Institute of Philosophy in Nairobi and a degree from the Pontifical Urban University. He studied theology at the Missionary Institute of London (affiliated with Middlesex University) from 1997 to 2001.
Priesthood and ministry: After his ordination in 2001, he served as a priest in the Consolata Missionaries and held roles including parish priest and Rector of the Consolata Shrine in Westlands, Nairobi, before his 2025 appointment as coadjutor bishop.
