Public Employee Department
Public Employee Department was a part of the AFL-CIO that brought together U.S. unions for government workers. It started as the Government Employees' Council of the AFL in 1945. When the AFL joined with the CIO to form the AFL-CIO, the council stayed on and grew to more than 20 unions by 1963. In 1974, a new Public Employee Department was created and absorbed the council. At its founding, it had 24 affiliated unions representing more than 2 million public employees. In the 1990s, the department focused on building a framework for labor–management cooperation. It was dissolved in 1998.
