Internationaler Naturpark Bourtanger Moor-Bargerveen
Internationaler Naturpark Bourtanger Moor-Bargerveen is a cross-border nature reserve in western Lower Saxony, Germany, and the northeast of the Netherlands. It spans parts of Germany’s Emsland and Grafschaft Bentheim counties and the Dutch province of Drenthe. The landscape features large peat bogs, heath, small lakes and very few people live there. The park was established on June 1, 2006.
In Germany, the Bourtanger Moor area covers about 140 square kilometers. The original Moor was much bigger, around 3,000 square kilometers, but most of it has disappeared. The reserve is home to plants such as common cotton-grass and sundews, and to animals like the viviparous lizard, grass snake, short-eared owl and European nightjar.
The Dutch part, Bargerveen Nature Reserve, was designated in 1992. It covers about 2,600 hectares (roughly 6,400 acres) and consists mainly of bog land.
