Dudley, North Carolina

Dudley is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Wayne County, about 9 miles south of Goldsboro. It is part of the Goldsboro metropolitan area. As of 2020, about 826 people lived in Dudley, which covers around 2.8 square miles.

History
- The area has two early Dudleys. The original Dudley was north of the current town; its post office started in 1840, was later renamed Everettsville, and closed in 1866.
- The present Dudley began around 1836–1840 as a stop on the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad and was named for Governor Edward B. Dudley, a founder of the railroad. A depot and passenger station served the town, and the post office opened on February 3, 1850.
- In December 1862, during the Battle of Goldsborough Bridge, the Union Army damaged buildings and railroad cars in Dudley.
- Dudley was incorporated in 1897 with J. W. Hatch as the first mayor, but later lost its incorporated status and became unincorporated.

Economy
- Georgia-Pacific opened a facility in 1973 and now employs more than 600 people.

- Public schools are operated by Wayne County Public Schools: Brogden Primary, Brogden Middle, and Southern Wayne High School.
- Higher education is available at Wayne Community College in Goldsboro and Mount Olive College in Mount Olive.
