In the Heart of the Sea (film)
In the Heart of the Sea is a 2015 historical adventure drama directed by Ron Howard. It’s based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s book about the 1820 sinking of the American whaling ship Essex and the crew’s desperate fight for survival. The story partly inspired Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick.
Cast highlights include Chris Hemsworth as Owen Chase, Benjamin Walker as Captain George Pollard, with Cillian Murphy, Tom Holland, Ben Whishaw, and Brendan Gleeson in supporting roles.
Plot in simple terms: The Nantucket-based Essex sails to hunt whales for valuable oil. A massive white whale attacks the ship, sinking it and leaving the crew stranded at sea in small boats with dwindling supplies. They endure storms, starvation, and thirst as they drift toward rescue. Some crew members die, and a few survive by making painful choices, including cannibalism. The surviving men are eventually found, and their tale helps shape Herman Melville’s vision for Moby-Dick.
Production notes: The screenplay was written by Charles Leavitt from a story by Leavitt, Rick Jaffa, and Amanda Silver. Filming took place mainly in the United Kingdom (Leavesden Studios) and the Canary Islands, with a large storm sequence shot in a water tank. Chris Hemsworth underwent significant weight loss for the role. The score was composed by Roque Baños.
Release and reception: The film premiered in New York on December 7, 2015, and opened in the United States on December 11, 2015, distributed by Warner Bros. It had a production budget of about $100 million and grossed roughly $94 million worldwide, making it a box-office disappointment. Critics gave it mixed reviews, with Rotten Tomatoes around 42% and Metacritic around 47. Audiences gave it a B+ on CinemaScore. Some critics praised its visuals but found the story emotionally uneven.
