Soup for One (film)
Soup for One is a 1982 American sex comedy written and directed by Jonathan Kaufer and produced by Marvin Worth. It stars Saul Rubinek, Marcia Strassman, and Gerrit Graham. The film runs 84 minutes and is in English. It’s best remembered for its soundtrack, produced by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards of Chic, who also perform the title track.
Plot
Allan, a Jewish cable TV producer in New York City, wants to find the perfect woman. He even sketches what she should look like. After a string of disastrous dates, he meets Maria, who seems perfect, and he tries to make the relationship work.
Soundtrack
The soundtrack was produced by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards of Chic. The title song “Soup for One” charted, and Chic also contributed other tracks such as “I Want Your Love” and “Tavern on the Green.” Some appearances and songs by other artists were connected to the film, including tracks by Sister Sledge, Debbie Harry, Carly Simon, and Teddy Pendergrass. The soundtrack album was released by WEA/Mirage and was reissued on CD in 2015.
Release and reception
The film opened on April 30, 1982, in New York City and other areas. It received mostly negative or mixed reviews, with critics faulting its gratuitous sex scenes and weak plotting. Some reviewers found it energetic or had mild praise for the performances and potential of the young filmmaker, but overall it was not a box-office success.
