Cenil
Cenil, also called cetil or cendil, is a traditional Javanese snack from Java, Indonesia. It’s made from tapioca flour and sugar, colored with food coloring, and shaped into small balls or cubes, then rolled in grated coconut. Cenil is commonly sold in Central Java and Yogyakarta and is linked to Pacitan in East Java. It’s often served with other snacks like klepon, kicak, getuk, ciwel, cantel, pertolo and tepo. The name cenil comes from Javanese and means small and cute, reflecting its tiny size and colorful appearance (green, yellow, red, pink, brown). The earliest record is in the 1814 Serat Centhini, though some experts think a similar snack existed as far back as the Mataram era (around the 8th century). In the 1990s it was mostly found in traditional markets that operated on Javanese pasaran days.
