Igor Moiseyev Ballet
The Igor Moiseyev State Academic Ensemble of Popular Dance, known as the Igor Moiseyev Ballet, is a Moscow-based dance company that specializes in character dance. It combines traditional folk dances with classical ballet to create its distinctive style.
Founded on February 10, 1937 by Igor Moiseyev with 35 dancers, the troupe grew with support from the Soviet leadership. It soon made Moscow its base, moving into the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall for its studio and performances.
The Moiseyev Ballet became famous worldwide. Its first foreign performance was in 1945 in Finland, and it began touring internationally in 1955. From 1958, the company regularly toured the United States, helped by cultural agreements and impresarios who invited it to major venues, including the Metropolitan Opera House. The group also appeared on television, such as The Ed Sullivan Show.
In 1986, a tear gas attack during a Moiseyev Ballet performance at the Metropolitan Opera House forced evacuations and injured several people. Despite such incidents, the company continued to perform and tour around the world.
Throughout its history, the Moiseyev Ballet has been praised by many dancers and critics for creating a new, recognizable form of folk-inspired dance. It has been described in the West as a nationalist style tied to its Soviet era, but it is also credited with promoting international cultural exchange. The company has influenced folk dance traditions in other countries and remains active, touring and performing today.
