Night Market Life
Night Market Life (夜市人生) is a Taiwanese Hokkien-language drama that aired on Formosa Television from December 22, 2009 to July 19, 2011. It is noted as Formosa TV’s first high-definition drama. The cast includes Chen Meifeng, Morning Chang, Peng Chia-chia, Jimmy Ni, Wang Shih-hsien, Fon Cin, Mike Lee, and Chiang Tsu-ping, among others.
Despite its title, the story mostly follows a group of night market vendors and their families. Cai Yuexia runs a stall at Jin Hua Night Market with her husband Li Qing Xiang. Their children—Li You Zhi, Li You Hui, and Li Xiao Xuan—meet as kids and later face love, rivals, and success as adults. The show expands from one family to two generations and a wider circle of friends and foes, including a prominent group of former schoolmates known as the “golden six.”
The series blends family drama, romance, business conflicts, and criminal elements set against the backdrop of a bustling night market. It covers the years 1998 to 2008, following how the characters cope with betrayal, ambition, illness, and forgiveness while supporting or challenging each other.
Night Market Life was produced with high-definition technology and aired in prime time on weekdays. It later inspired remastered HD versions and reruns on Formosa TV and CTS, and it was broadcast in several other countries, sometimes in Mandarin or with subtitles/dubbing. The show left a lasting impression as a long-running, multi-generational drama centered on community, loyalty, and the colorful life of a night market.
