Dombey and Son (1969 TV series)

Dombey and Son is a 1969 British television drama serial based on Charles Dickens’s 1848 novel. It was directed by Joan Craft, stars John Carson and Kara Wilson, and was produced by Campbell Logan for BBC One. The series aired from 17 August to 9 November 1969 and ran for 1 season of 13 episodes.

Plot: A wealthy shipping magnate, after the death of his wife and his only son, intends to run the business himself and neglects his daughter Florence, but he eventually reconciles with her near the end of his life.

Production notes: The show was made in black and white. Of the 13 episodes, three (episodes 1, 4, and 6) survive on their original 625-line videotape masters, while the other ten episodes exist only as 16mm telerecordings due to archival wiping.

Home release: The series was released on DVD in 2017 by Simply Media, with high-quality picture and sound.

Reception: Critics noted the adaptation’s ability to condense Dickens’s novel while maintaining its key elements and praised the strong cast.
