Houa Vue Moua, born around 1954, and co-author Barbara J. Rolland wrote Trail Through The Mists about Moua’s early life in Laos during the Secret War and her escape to Thailand as the Hmong diaspora began. Moua and her husband, Yong Kay Moua, along with other family members, were among the first Hmong refugees to resettle in Wisconsin. In Wisconsin, she became a bilingual mediator for the growing Hmong community, focusing on health issues. Their outreach work earned the Thousand Points of Light Award in 1990 from President Bush. Moua also served as a spokeswoman for the Hmong, giving workshops on culture, religion, and history. In 1998, the University of Wisconsin System honored her for her contributions to diversity education.
