Hocking Correctional Facility
Hocking Correctional Facility was a state prison located at 16759 Snake Hollow Road, near Nelsonville in Ward Township, Hocking County, Ohio. It opened in 1982 after originally being built in 1952 as a sanatorium and later a children’s center. The facility was designed to house the state's aging inmate population and had a capacity of 481 inmates, with about 110 staff.
In 2007, the prison’s operating budget was $13,867,468 and the daily cost per inmate was $80.94. That year it housed 481 inmates: 111 African American, 363 Caucasian, and 7 Latino. By 2018 the population was about 430 inmates.
In January 2018, officials announced the prison would close in March to trim operating costs, and it did close in March 2018. The plan was to reopen in 2019 as a women’s rehabilitation center.
