Hob (hearth)
Hob (hearth) is a part of a kitchen near the fire used to hold food or utensils and keep them warm. It can be a projection, shelf, grate, or bench at the back or side of a hearth, or a corner by the chimney. In modern British English, hob usually means the cooktop or hotplate you cook on, separate from the oven. The word “hob” means “holder” and comes from Old English habban, meaning to have or hold. The related word hub shares the same origin.
