Heavy Nova (video game)

Heavy Nova is a 1991 video game by Micronet for the Sega CD, Genesis, and X68000. It mixes platforming with fighting and mission elements. You play as a robot operator who wants to earn the top rank, Heavy Nova.

Gameplay is split into two parts. In the platform sections, you control a Heavy D.O.L.L robot, defeat enemies, and reach the end of the level. In the fighting sections, you face end-of-stage bosses using fighting moves and special attacks from the Idar weapon (including missiles). Both modes use energy bars; taking too much damage lowers energy, and if you drop to two bars you can’t move. There is also a two-player mode where two players battle using the game's robot models.

Story-wise, the game is set in the 21st century. Earth’s resources dwindle, aliens from the planet Akirov help rebuild Earth, and peace returns. Later, a war breaks out as Akirovians’ plans are revealed. The Heavy D.O.L.L robots are Earth’s main defense, and the player works to earn the Heavy Nova rank.

Release dates:
- Mega-CD (JP): December 12, 1991

Sequel: Black Hole Assault arrived in 1992 and focuses more on fighting than platforming.

Reception: Heavy Nova received very negative reviews. Critics cited poor animation, unresponsive controls, weak level design, and overall dull gameplay. Entertainment Weekly gave it a low grade, noting its ponderous moves and minimal action.
