Gwadar District
Gwadar District is in the southern part of Balochistan, Pakistan, along the Arabian Sea. The district’s headquarters is the city of Gwadar. It was formed on 1 July 1977 and covers about 12,637 square kilometers. As of 2023, about 305,000 people live in Gwadar District, with roughly half living in towns (urban) and half in rural areas. The main languages are Balochi and Urdu, and the literacy rate is around 50% (men about 58%, women about 42%). Islam is the dominant religion.
Geography and features
- Gwadar District borders Lasbela to the east, Kech and Awaran to the north, Iran to the west, and the Arabian Sea to the south.
- It has a long coast, about 600–620 kilometers, along the Gulf of Oman.
- A key feature is Gwadar Port, a deep-water port on the eastern bay of a natural promontory.
- The district sits on a narrow isthmus about 12 kilometers long that connects the coast to the promontory, forming two bays: the western Paddi Zirr and the eastern Demi Zirr harbour where the port is located.
- Gwadar District is divided into five tehsils (sub-districts), including Gwadar, Ormara, Pasni, and Jiwani, among others. There are 18 union councils in total.
People and living
- In 2023, there were about 50,357 households.
- The population is almost all Muslim (with small Hindu, Christian and other minority communities).
- The first language most people speak is Balochi (about 98%), with small shares speaking Sindhi, Punjabi, or Urdu.
- The sex ratio is around 111 males for every 100 females.
- About 88,795 people are under 10 years old.
Education and challenges
- Gwadar’s education system faces challenges: enrollment is relatively low, schools are unevenly distributed, and facilities like science labs and trained teachers are in short supply.
- Girls’ schools are fewer than boys’ schools, contributing to educational gaps. The district ranks mid to low nationally on education indicators, with room for improvement in school infrastructure and learning outcomes.
Notable context
- The district is best known for Gwadar Port, a major economic and strategic asset for Pakistan and regional trade.
