Gregg Brandon
Gregg Brandon (born February 29, 1956) is an American football coach and former player. He most recently served as the head coach at the Colorado School of Mines from 2015 to 2021, retiring after the 2021 season. He has also been the offensive coordinator at New Mexico State and coached in the United Football League for the Las Vegas Locomotives. Earlier in his career, he was the offensive coordinator at the University of Wyoming and the Virginia Cavaliers in 2009, and he was head coach at Bowling Green from 2003 to 2008.
Brandon played college football as a defensive back and wide receiver at Colorado Mesa University (1974) and the University of Northern Colorado (1975–1977). He graduated from Northern Colorado in 1978 with a degree in education. He began coaching as the head football coach at Ellicott High School in Colorado (1978–1980) before moving to the college ranks at Weber State (1981–1986). He then coached at Wyoming (1987–1990) and Utah State (1991), followed by Northwestern (1992–1998). He spent 1999–2000 at Colorado, coaching receivers and kickoff return units and serving as passing-game and recruiting coordinator at different times.
Brandon joined Bowling Green as an assistant head coach and offensive coordinator after the 2000 season, under Urban Meyer. When Meyer left for Utah in 2003, Brandon became the Falcons’ head coach. He led Bowling Green to an 11–3 season and a MAC Championship Game appearance in 2003, and bowls in 2003 and 2004. The 2006 season was his first losing year, but 2007 saw an 8–5 finish and a third bowl appearance. After a 6–6 finish in 2008, he was fired.
He then became the offensive coordinator at Virginia in 2009, and later coached in the UFL for the Las Vegas Locomotives in 2010. Brandon also served as Wyoming’s offensive coordinator (2011–2012) and as Colorado State’s and New Mexico State’s offensive coordinator/QB coach (2013–2014). In 2015, he became the head coach at Colorado Mines, where he led the team to multiple RMAC titles and a Division II national semifinal run, finishing with a 103–45 record in college coaching and 4–4 in NCAA Division II playoff appearances.
In 2021, Brandon was accused of barging into a civil engineering lecture with a group, harassing a professor and nearly 100 students by blowing a whistle, turning off the projector, and telling everyone to leave to free the room for the team. The university apologized to the class, and he retained his position. He announced his retirement as Colorado Mines’ head coach in January 2022.
Brandon is married to Robyn Mitchell and has two sons. In 2024, he was announced as the head coach for the Cologne Centurions of the European League of Football.
