Amaidhipadai
Amaidhipadai (Peacekeeping Force) is a 1994 Tamil political satire directed by Manivannan. It stars Sathyaraj in a dual role as Amavasai and his son Nagaraja Cholan, with Ranjitha, Kasthuri, and Sujatha in supporting roles. The film follows a corrupt politician who climbs to power through shady means, while his honest son, a police officer, vows to bring him down.
Backstory shows Amavasai as a sly, lazy man who becomes close to a rising politician, Mani. He rapes Thayamma and later marries Sivakami for wealth after Thayamma dies. Amavasai changes his name to Nagaraja Cholan and wins elections by manipulation, gaining immense power and becoming arrogant. Thangavel, Thayamma’s son, grows up in the village and becomes a police constable. He learns that Amavasai is his father and decides to stop him.
As elections approach, Amavasai triggers a caste riot to win votes and even kills in the process. Thangavel, now a police officer, protects him at first but then confronts him. Sivakami plans to testify against Amavasai, and Thangavel, with her help, works to bring him to justice. Amavasai abducts Kuyili, Thangavel’s beloved, and a dramatic showdown ensues. Thangavel escapes, defeats his father’s henchmen, and ultimately shoots Amavasai, who dies forgiving his son.
Amaidhipadai released on January 13, 1994, during Pongal, and became a silver-jubilee hit, running for over 25 weeks and gaining a lasting cult following. The film’s success helped spawn remakes: in Telugu as M. Dharmaraju M.A. (1994) and in Hindi as Jallaad (1995). It also inspired a spiritual successor, Nagaraja Cholan MA, MLA (2013), with Sathyaraj reprising the title role. The music was composed by Ilaiyaraaja, and the story is noted for its sharp political critique and strong performances, especially Sathyaraj’s portrayal of Amavasai/Nagaraja Cholan.
