Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido
Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido is an action-puzzle game by indieszero and published by Nintendo for Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Switch. It released worldwide on June 8, 2018.
Gameplay
In battles, you face an opponent across three conveyor belts on each side and one belt between you. You must quickly match sushi plates of the same color on your belts to build attacks. Musashi eats the matched plates, and the plates attack the opponent. The more matches you chain, the stronger the attack. The game also includes online multiplayer.
Story
In a world where sushi is forbidden by the Empire, Musashi, an orphan, joins forces with a sushi sprite named Jinrai and the Sushi Liberation Front (SLF) to end the ban. They rescue friends, uncover secrets, and fight against Imperial forces led by generals like Tiburon. The tale includes twists about Musashi’s family and the fate of the land, ending in peace and renewed hope for sushi’s future.
Development
The idea came from Nintendo producer Hitoshi Yamagami and director Kaori Ando. Indieszero joined to help turn it into a game. It was first announced in 2017 as a 3DS exclusive, and a Switch version with online multiplayer was revealed in a 2018 Nintendo Direct. The game released on June 8, 2018.
Reception and sales
The game received generally favorable reviews, with praise for its puzzle gameplay, art style, and story, but some criticism of campaign length and controls. In its first week in Japan, it sold 5,325 copies on Switch and 2,392 on 3DS.
