Michael Tackett
Michael Tackett is an American journalist who serves as the Deputy Washington Bureau Chief of the Associated Press. He has covered national politics for The New York Times and has held senior roles at Chicago Tribune, US News & World Report, Bloomberg LP, and The Times.
Early life and education
Tackett grew up in Anderson, Indiana. He earned a BA in Journalism and Political Science from Indiana University Bloomington in 1980 and a Doctor of Law from The John Marshall Law School in Chicago in 1985.
Career
Tackett began his journalism career at The Chicago Tribune. By 2001 he was National Editor at US News & World Report, and in 2005 he returned to the Tribune as Washington Bureau Chief. He later became Managing Editor at Bloomberg LP in August 2008, a position he held until 2013, when he joined The New York Times as a national political reporter based in Washington. While at The Times in 2014, he edited a series on state attorneys general by Eric Lipton that won the Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting. Tackett has also received the White House Correspondents’ Association’s Edgar A. Poe Award for National Reporting.
Books
He is the author of The Baseball Whisperer (2016) and The Price of Power (2024), a biography of Mitch McConnell.
Current status
Tackett continues his journalism career as Deputy Washington Bureau Chief for the Associated Press.
