Great Astrolabe Reef
Great Astrolabe Reef is a huge barrier reef off Kadavu Island in Fiji. Kadavu Island is about 65 km long and lies roughly 100 km south of Fiji’s main island, Viti Levu.
The reef is one of the world’s largest barrier reefs and surrounds Kadavu and nearby Ono Island. It has many channels that let deep water mix with shallow lagoons, making it a popular home for big fish and other sea life.
Naiqoro Passage is one of the reef’s main channels and is protected from fishing, with entry fees. This helps large fish keep using the passage as a busy route through the reef. The reef’s lagoon ecosystem is an important part of Fiji’s biodiversity.
Naming and tourism: the reef was named after the French ship Astrolabe. It’s a great place to see marine life and coral because it’s relatively far from crowded population centers. For visitors, Buliya is famous for manta ray snorkeling. Water temperatures range from 25 to 32 degrees Celsius, and visibility is usually 25–40 meters. Resorts on Kadavu and Ono Islands offer easy access for snorkeling and scuba diving.
