The Bunker is a live-action FMV adventure-horror game by Splendy Games, published by Wales Interactive. It released for Windows, OS X, and PlayStation 4 on 20 September 2016, then for Xbox One on 23 September 2016 and Nintendo Switch on 9 April 2018. It was Splendy Games’ big independent project after The Hunting.

Gameplay and story
The game is shown entirely with live-action footage and played as a single-player, point-and-click adventure. You guide John, who grew up in a British nuclear fallout bunker, through the bunker using flashbacks and present-day footage to uncover its secrets.

Plot in simple terms
In 1986 England is hit by a nuclear attack and people shelter underground. Margaret gives birth to John as bombs fall. Thirty years later, John is the lone survivor after Margaret dies. He follows his mother’s routines, but the bunker’s systems fail. He must explore lower levels, fix the problems, and recall childhood memories. He learns that Margaret kept John safe by deceiving others, and that Hurley tried to stop them. John ends up with the last of the supplies and faces a choice at the exit: stay in the bunker and die from radiation or leave to breathe outside, not knowing if it’s safe.

Development and cast
The Bunker was filmed entirely at the Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker in Essex, England, over 15 days, with about a year of development. The cast includes Adam Brown (The Hobbit) and Sarah Greene (Penny Dreadful), along with Grahame Fox and Jerome St. John Blake.

Reception and awards
The game received mixed reviews. Metacritic scores are around 68/100 for PS4 and 66/100 for Xbox One. Critics praised the story, atmosphere, and performances but criticized the limited interactivity. It earned three nominations at the 2016 TIGA Games Industry Awards: Most Original Game, Audio Design, and Game of the Year.
