Great 3
Great 3, stylised as GREAT3, is a Japanese rock band formed in 1994. The trio features Akito Katayose (guitar, vocals), Kenichi Shirane (drums, vocals), and jan (bass, vocals), who all write songs and sing. The name references that all three members are tall. They formed after their previous band Rotten Hats dissolved in February 1994; some members then formed Hicksville.
The group released its Toshiba EMI debut with the single Fool & the Gang and the album Richmondo High in 1995, and later started their own label, Bodicious. In the early 2000s they worked with American producer John McEntire on the albums May and December (2001), When You Were a Beauty (2002) and Climax (2003). When You Were a Beauty included players from The Sea and Cake, Tortoise and Wilco.
Great 3 went on hiatus in February 2004 as members pursued solo projects. In May 2012, Kiyoshi Takakuwa left the band, and in July they released the digital single Emotion / Lady. In August 2012 it was announced that jan would be the new bassist. Their first album with jan, Great3, was released on 21 November 2012. A second album, Ai no Kankei, followed on 19 March 2014 and remains their most recent release.
