Gramma dejongi

Gramma dejongi, the golden basslet, also known as the Cuban gramma or golden fairy basslet, is a small tropical reef fish from the Grammatidae family. It is found mainly around southern Cuba in Caribbean reefs, at about 20 meters deep, and grows to about 7 cm.

This fish has a golden yellow body with purple patches on its fins and belly, plus a black spot on the dorsal fin. It is smaller, lives deeper, and doesn’t swim upside down like its close relative, the Royal gramma (G. loreto). It was described in 2010 by Benjamin C. Victor and John E. Randall, with the type location off Sancti Spíritus, Cuba. The name honors Arie De Jong, who first spotted it as a potential new species. The species is mostly found around Cuba, with one reported individual near Little Cayman; it may have evolved in the same area as the Royal gramma.

Gramma dejongi is kept by aquarium hobbyists, though not as popular yet. A notable color form bred by enthusiasts is the "Platinum" variant, which is white instead of purple.
