Goliad Declaration of Independence

The Goliad Declaration of Independence was signed on December 20, 1835, at Presidio La Bahía in Mexican Texas. It was signed by 91 Texan colonists and Tejanos from Gulf Coast settlements who wanted to break away from Mexico and form an independent Texas. The document, drafted by Ira Ingram, the mayor of Matagorda, was a precursor to the Texas Declaration of Independence. When it reached the Consultation in San Felipe de Austin, it was seen as premature. Texans were not yet united on whether to declare independence or to remain part of Mexico under the 1824 constitution. The declaration was sent to the Committee on State and Judiciary and was eventually filed away.
