Girl in the Movies is a song by Dolly Parton, co-written with Linda Perry for the 2018 Netflix film Dumplin'. It appears on the Dumplin' soundtrack and was released as the second single on November 2, 2018. The song was produced by Linda Perry and Dolly Parton.
It was nominated for Best Original Song at the 76th Golden Globes and for Best Song Written for Visual Media at the 62nd Grammy Awards.
Rolling Stone called it a dreamy ballad with strong movie theater metaphors, while Wide Open Country described it as a song for daydreamers who imagine shining like their favorite movie characters.
The music video, released on November 19, 2018, is black-and-white with Parton singing and playing guitar, intercut with color clips from the film.
Parton first performed the song live on October 22, 2018, at a Dumplin' luncheon in Los Angeles with Linda Perry on guitar. She later performed it on November 30, 2018, on NBC's Today show, and that evening on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where she also did a Christmas medley and an interview. She also performed it on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on December 6, 2018.
