Gibson Lucas
Gibson Lucas (1615–1698) was an English Puritan theologian who played a political role during the English Civil War. He was born in Horringer, the son of William Lucas and Christian (daughter of Thomas Gibson, an alderman of Norwich), and studied at Bury Grammar School and Caius College, Cambridge. A Parliamentarian, he took part in the 1645 Bury Conference and later served as a Committeeman for the 11th Division of Suffolk during the Westminster Assembly era. He was a leading Justice of the Peace in Suffolk. Lucas encouraged Joseph Hall, whose title as Bishop of Norwich had been abolished by the 1646 ordinance, to reconsider episcopal authority. Lucas helped Hall ordain 63 priests in defiance of the ordinance, and Hall regarded Lucas as a notable example for the learned gentry to follow.
