Ghurki, Pakistan
Ghurki is a village on the outskirts of Lahore, in Punjab, Pakistan, near the Wagah Border. It is named after the Ghurki Arain family, who were known as gold traders in Lahore. A notable early member was Haji Muhammad Asghar Ghurki, who founded Ghurki Hospital.
Asghar Ghurki became a member of the National Assembly in 1985 in partyless elections. His son, Khalid Javed Ghurki, was elected MNA in 1993 from Eastern Lahore with the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). He also served as parliamentary secretary for railways and was Wahgah Town Nazim (mayor) from 2001 to 2005. Khalid Javed Ghurki died in 2011 after medical problems.
Khalid’s wife, Samina Khalid Ghurki, pursued politics and won a seat in the National Assembly in 2008 on the PPP ticket, and was re-elected. She has held several federal ministerial roles, including Special Education, Environment, and National Integration and Heritage. Samina is the mother of two sons and two daughters, and her husband Khalid Javed Ghurki was a former MP who has passed away.
Other Ghurki family members active in politics include Farooq Ghurki (former Provincial Minister for Information and Technology), Arshad Ghurki, and Muhammad Iqbal Ghurki (former Provincial Minister). The family partially funds the Ghurki Trust Teaching Hospital in Lahore.
