George William, Hereditary Prince of Hanover
George William, Hereditary Prince of Hanover, was born on 28 October 1880 in Gmunden, Austria-Hungary, and died on 20 May 1912 near Nackel, Germany, in a car crash at age 31. He was the eldest son of Ernest Augustus, Crown Prince of Hanover, and Princess Thyra of Denmark, a member of the Hanoverian royal line. After Hanover was annexed by Prussia in 1866, his family lived in exile in Austria. He was the heir to the duchy of Cumberland and to the Hanoverian claim. He was christened in Gmunden in 1880; his godparents included many royal relatives. He served as an army officer but never saw active service and spent winters in Egypt for health. He enjoyed cars and hunting and represented his father at royal events.
George William died while traveling to attend his uncle’s funeral; his car hit a patch of uneven road at high speed. His valet was killed, and his chauffeur survived. He is buried at the family mausoleum in Gmunden. His death led to condolences from the German emperor and, later, a reconciliation between the Hanover and Hohenzollern houses.
