George Long (footballer)
George Long (George Martin Long) is an English professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper. Born on 5 November 1993 in Sheffield, he is 1.93 m tall. As of 2025, he is on loan at Southampton from Norwich City.
Long began his career with Sheffield United, coming through their academy and making his first-team debut in May 2011 at the age of 17, becoming the club’s youngest league goalkeeper. He was part of the team that reached the FA Youth Cup final in 2011.
During his time with Sheffield United, he had loan spells at Oxford United (2014), Motherwell (2015) and AFC Wimbledon (2017–18). In 2018 he joined Hull City, where he played until 2021, then moved to Millwall for two seasons. He signed for Norwich City in 2023 and extended his contract in 2024. In August 2025, he went on loan to Southampton.
Internationally, Long has represented England at under-18 and under-20 levels.
Notable moments include becoming Sheffield United’s youngest league goalkeeper, earning several team and league monthly awards early in his career, and saving a penalty in a 2016 League One match against Wigan Athletic. He has accumulated over 100 senior appearances across his career.
