Georg Albrecht (mayor)
Georg Albrecht (1603–1666) was a leading figure in Rothenburg ob der Tauber and served as mayor three times (1658, 1660, 1663).
Background and family
He was born on 8 July 1603 into the patrician Albrecht family of Rothenburg. His father, Leonhard Albrecht, died in 1613 when Georg was nine. His mother, Maria Magdalena Albrecht (née Forst), later married Bernhard Betzold, a member of Rothenburg’s Interior Council, which helped keep Georg well connected in city life.
Education
Georg began at the city’s German school and then attended the Latin school. He studied at the University of Altdorf and then at the University of Strasbourg, joining in 1621. There he studied law under Matthias Bernegger and wrote a political-legal thesis in 1624, De Judiciorum Cura Politica, arguing for professionalizing and secularizing legal processes in the Holy Roman Empire. His time in Strasbourg and a visit to Tübingen connected him with influential Lutheran circles.
Family connections
Georg married Susanna Husel, with ties to Rothenburg’s political families through his stepfather’s relatives. They had eight children, four sons and four daughters, of whom five survived him.
Career in Rothenburg
After returning to Rothenburg, he quickly rose in public life:
- 1628: Appointed to the Exterior Council as Assessor of the peasant court.
- 1632: Joined the Interior Council.
- 1633: Elected Middle Tax Official, a post he held for about 25 years.
- 1634: Became Consistor and Scolarcha, responsible for church affairs and alms.
He received fiefs from Würzburg (1635 and 1644) and, from 1657 onward, Imperial fiefs, earning official recognition from the imperial government and contributing to the Albrecht family’s coat of arms.
Mayor and other roles
Georg was elected Mayor of Rothenburg ob der Tauber for the first time in 1658. That year he also became Hospital Manager, held a royal hunting privilege (Wildbann), and managed Communal Alms. In 1659 he was appointed Vogt and Ober-Steurer. He was elected Mayor again in 1660 and became Manager of Monasteries. His third and final mayoral term came in 1663.
Death and legacy
On 5 February 1666 he experienced indigestion and a speech difficulty, then a stroke, and died early on 6 February while still involved in city duties. He was buried beside his wife Susanna in Rothenburg’s Alter Friedhof (Old Cemetery). His epitaph honors his leadership and dedication to church, school, and the common good.
