Tyin
Tyin is a lake in Norway, mostly in Vang municipality in Innlandet county, with a small part reaching into Årdal municipality in Vestland county. It sits in the southwest of the Jotunheimen mountains. The lake is used as a reservoir for the Tyin Hydroelectric Power Station, so its water level is kept between about 1,072.5 and 1,082.8 meters above sea level.
Tyin covers about 33 square kilometers (around 13 square miles). It is up to 14 kilometers long and 5 kilometers wide, with an average depth of 25 meters and a maximum depth of 81 meters. It holds roughly 0.83 cubic kilometers of water. The main inflows are Breikvamsåi, Koldedøla, and Våga, while the outflow is the river Tya, which connects to Årdalsvatnet and the Sognefjord.
The lake area is bordered by the county roads 53 along the south side (Tyin–Årdal) and 252 along the east side (Tyin–Eidsbugarden), both linking to European route E16 to the south. In 1869 the Norwegian Mountain Touring Association built its first cabin on Tyin’s shore, and today the area has several DNT cabins, making it a popular touring region near Jotunheim National Park. The name Tyin comes from the nearby river Tya; the exact meaning of the river name is unknown.
