Proclamation Island
Proclamation Island is a small rocky island in the Southern Ocean, about 2.5 nautical miles (5 km) west of Cape Batterbee near the Aagaard Islands in Antarctica. It rises up to 244 meters and is uninhabited. The island is governed under the Antarctic Treaty System.
It was discovered by the British Australian New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE) led by Douglas Mawson during 1929–1931. On 13 January 1930, Mawson read a proclamation on the summit claiming the area for the British Crown and left a cairn and plaque to mark the event.
The cairn and plaque are designated as a Historic Site or Monument (HSM 3) by the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting, following a proposal by Australia.
