Garden of Evil
Garden of Evil is a 1954 American Western directed by Henry Hathaway. It stars Gary Cooper as Hooker, Susan Hayward as Leah Fuller, Richard Widmark as Fiske, Cameron Mitchell as a young bounty hunter, and Víctor Manuel Mendoza as Vicente. The story follows three American adventurers who are hired by Leah to rescue her husband John, trapped in a gold mine in a ruined boom town nicknamed the Garden of Evil after a volcanic eruption.
In a Mexican village, Hooker (an ex-sheriff), Fiske (a gambler), and the bounty hunter join Leah’s mission. Leah offers them money and leads them toward the mine with the help of Vicente. The place is surrounded by dangerous terrain and hostile Apaches, and Leah has secretly hidden the trail markers so she can control the route. They find John alive but badly injured; they rescue him and bring him to a cabin where Hooker sets his broken leg.
As they head back, tension grows. John suspects Leah is after the mine’s gold, though she denies it. The group is picked off by the Apaches: the bounty hunter is killed, and later John is found dead, hung on a cross. Vicente is also killed, leaving Hooker, Leah, and a wounded Fiske to reach safety. A cliff path becomes the last obstacle. In a card draw, the loser stays behind to defend Leah while the others escape. Fiske loses and stays behind, sacrificing himself to protect them. He admits he cheated on the draw before dying. Hooker returns to Leah, and they ride off together.
The movie was shot in Mexico to showcase CinemaScope’s wide visuals, with outdoor scenes filmed in places like Tepotzotlán, near Acapulco, and Guanajuato, and interiors at Churubusco Studios. Some scenes used matte paintings to enhance the landscape. The working title was Volcano, later dropped to avoid confusion with another film.
Critics noted the film’s striking scenery, though some found the story bloated or the meanings obvious. The New York Times praised the awe-inspiring landscapes, while Pauline Kael criticized it for being overblown.
