Gállego (river)
Gállego is a river in Aragon, Spain, and one of the main tributaries of the Ebro. It flows for about 193 kilometers and drains around 4,000 square kilometers. The river starts high in the Pyrenees, about 2,200 meters above sea level near Col du Pourtalet. It runs through the Tena Valley, passing Sallent de Gállego, Panticosa and Biescas. From Sabiñánigo it forms a wide bend at Triste, then mostly heads north to flow into the Ebro near Zaragoza. Its main upper-basin tributaries are Aguas Limpias, Caldarés, Escarra, Lana Mayor and Aurín; in the middle and lower basin they include Guarga, Seco, Asabón and Sotón. Much of its water is regulated and diverted during its course, so by the time it reaches the Ebro its flow is only about 10% of its natural discharge. The river gives its name to the Alto Gállego comarca in Aragon. Average discharge is about 34.2 cubic meters per second.
