Fresno Dome

Fresno Dome is a prominent granite dome in the Sierra National Forest, located in Madera County, California. It rises above Soquel Meadow in the Sierra Nevada and sits at an elevation of about 7,544 feet (2,299 meters) with a prominence of 260 feet.

Location and access: The dome is near the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway. It’s about a three‑mile drive from the byway to the dome area, with Bass Lake about 9 miles to the south. At the base lies the Fresno Dome campground, reached via jeep trails. The area tends to be quiet outside deer season and is a favorite spot for deer hunters.

Climbing: Fresno Dome offers several technical free climbs, many rated Yosemite Decimal System class 5. One well‑known route is Guides in a Snowbank, which is rated 5.10a.

History and name: The Mono people called the dome wah-me-yelo, meaning “the greeting place.” John Muir encountered Fresno Dome in the 1870s, calling it Wamello, and used its summit to locate Fresno Grove (now Nelder Grove).

Geology and maps: Fresno Dome is a granite dome formed in the geologic history of the region. The USGS topographic map for the area is the White Chief Mountains map.

Easiest route: The simplest way to the approach is a trail hike (Class 1).
