Freddy the Freshman
Freddy the Freshman is a 7-minute, black-and-white animated short from Warner Bros.’ Merrie Melodies. It was released on February 20, 1932 and directed by Rudolf Ising. The story follows Freddy, a dapper freshman in a raccoon coat who crashes a college pep rally and becomes the star of the big campus football game. The cartoon features the song “Freddy The Freshman, The Freshest Kid in Town,” written by Cliff Friend and Dave Oppenheim. The tune would later appear as a casual score cue in other Warner Bros. cartoons, including Raw! Raw! Rooster! and Bad Ol’ Putty Tat. Today, Freddy the Freshman is in the public domain.
