Rex Sunahara
Rex Sunahara (born October 9, 1996) is an American football long snapper for the Cleveland Browns in the NFL. He played college football at Rhode Island and West Virginia and has appeared in 12 NFL games with 2 total tackles.
Sunahara grew up in Bay Village, Ohio, and went to Bay High School, where he played baseball, football, and basketball. He earned All-Ohio Division IV Third Team honors as a senior. He is of Japanese descent through his father, Reed Sunahara, who is the head coach of WVU’s women’s volleyball team, and his younger brother RJ played college basketball for Georgia.
He started his college career at Rhode Island in 2015 as a multi-sport athlete and converted to long snapping for football. He walked on to West Virginia’s football team for the 2016 season, serving as a backup for two years before becoming the starting long snapper in 2018. He started 24 games across the 2018–2019 seasons and recorded 4 special-teams tackles. He was a Patrick Mannelly Award Semifinalist and received invites to the NFLPA Collegiate All-Star Game and the Hula Bowl.
Sunahara went undrafted in 2020 and signed with the Miami Dolphins. He spent time on and off the Dolphins’ practice squad and also had a stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers organization. In 2023 he played for the XFL’s San Antonio Brahmas after they drafted him in the specialists phase. He briefly returned to the Steelers in 2023 before rejoining the Brahmas in 2024.
On August 8, 2024, Sunahara signed with the Cleveland Browns. He was waived on August 26, signed to the practice squad, released a few days later, and then signed to the active roster on October 9.
