Expansion into Canada began in 1879 when Zeta Psi started a chapter at the University of Toronto. In 1883, Zeta Psi opened another chapter at McGill. Early foundations followed: Kappa Alpha Society at Toronto (1892) and at McGill (1899); Alpha Delta Phi at Toronto (1893) and at McGill (1897). The first sorority was Kappa Alpha Theta, established in Toronto in 1887. In 1902, Phi Delta Theta opened its first international chapter at McGill, called Quebec Alpha.

The two universities, Toronto and McGill, saw the strongest growth. By 1927, Baird's Manual listed 42 chapters at the University of Toronto and 23 at McGill. Several chapters existed at other Canadian schools, including the University of British Columbia, University of Calgary, Carleton University, Dalhousie University, University of Manitoba, Queen's University, University of Western Ontario, McMaster University, Wilfrid Laurier University, University of Waterloo, Brock University, and University of Alberta.

The article also includes lists of Canadian fraternities and sororities, with inactive organizations shown in italics.
