Winthrop Street station

Winthrop Street station is an underground stop on the IRT Nostrand Avenue Line in Brooklyn, at Winthrop Street and Nostrand Avenue in Prospect Lefferts Gardens. It is served by the 2 train at all times and the 5 train on weekdays during the day.

The station has two tracks and two side platforms that are slightly offset. The platforms were lengthened in the 1960s to fit 10-car trains. It opened on August 23, 1920, as part of the Dual Contracts, which brought the Nostrand Avenue Line to Brooklyn and spurred nearby development. In 2019, the Flatbush Avenue-bound platform was briefly closed to replace a staircase, and the opposite platform was closed briefly during that time.

There are separate fare areas for each platform, and there are no crossovers or crossunders to switch directions—the fare control areas connect you to the street rather than to the other platform. On the Manhattan-bound side, there is a staffed fare control area with a turnstile bank, a token booth, and a staircase to the northeast corner of Winthrop Street and Nostrand Avenue. The Flatbush Avenue-bound side has an unstaffed fare control with two exit-only turnstiles and a High Exit/Entry Turnstile leading to a mezzanine, with two staircases to the mezzanine. Outside, there is a staircase to the southwest corner of Parkside and Nostrand Avenues. The southbound platform once had an exit to Winthrop Street, but it’s no longer in use.
